How much soil does my pot need?
A round pot holds π × radius² × depth. A 12-inch pot that is 12 inches deep holds about 22 litres. Roughly two-thirds of that is soil mix; the rest is a drainage layer, a dry-leaf barrier and a margin at the top for watering.
Why does the mix change by plant?
Fruiting plants like tomato, gourds and lemon need rich, food-heavy soil. Herbs and leafy greens prefer a lighter, airier mix. Root crops like radish and carrot need loose, sandy soil, and succulents need gritty, fast-draining soil.
